Rupp bursts clear to claim rare home Chicago Marathon win

Galen Rupp Is Better Prepared For The Marathon Than Ever

An American has won the men's Chicago Marathon for the first time since 2002.

It crowned a superb season for the 32-year-old after she followed second place at the London Marathon in 2:17:56 - the fifth fastest time ever - with a 10,000m silver medal at the World Championships.

Rupp, who is a former track star and three-time Olympian, finished the Boston Marathon in second place a year ago and became the first American since 1964 to win a medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2012 London Olympics. The last American-born runner to win the men's race was Greg Meyer in 1982.

The Ethiopian attacked shortly before the field passed halfway in 1:08.48 before breaking clear from Kenyan rival Brigid Kosgei in the 19th mile.

Dibaba vowed to challenge the women's course record of 2:17:18 set by British world record holder Paula Radcliffe in 2002 and was on that pace in the early going. Khalid Khannouchi was the last US victor in 2002.

The World Marathon Majors continue on November 5 with the New York City Marathon.

The Ethiopian had set her sights on the course record of 2:17:18 and although that proved to be beyond her, Dibaba eased to victory nearly two minutes ahead of Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, while home favourite Jordan Hasay was third.

As Dibaba had more than a minute lead at the 40K mark, she was never in danger of finishing outside of the winner's circle. Kenya's Bernard Kipyego was third. Kosgei of Kenya finished second in the women's race, lowering her personal best by four minutes clocking 2:20:22.

The win is also a bounce back for McFadden, who finished fourth at this year's Boston Marathon following surgery for blood clots in February.
