Attack "terrorist" in Canada: at least five injured in Edmonton

Officer stabbed, pedestrians hit in Canada in suspected 'acts of terrorism'

The suspect accused of stabbing a police officer before crashing a speeding U-Haul van into a crowd of people in Edmonton, Canada, had come to the country from Somalia trying to claim refugee status, police revealed.

Sharif is charged with five counts of attempted murder and four counts of risky operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

The attack began outside a Canadian Football League game at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday night when police say a white Chevrolet Malibu rammed a traffic control barricade and sent an officer flying into the air 15 feet.

Mr Sharif is due to appear in an Edmonton court on 3 October.

Two of the four pedestrians whose injuries, according to Edmonton police chief Rod Knecht, had ranged from "broken arms to brain bleeds", have been released from hospital, authorities said Monday.

It started when a police officer handling crowd control at a football game was hit by a speeding vehicle that rammed through a barrier and sent him flying five metres through the air. A man then jumped out of the vehicle and began stabbing the officer with a knife.

Four pedestrians were also injured when they were run struck by a U-Haul van in downtown Edmonton.

"From all indications it appears that this was a single individual acting alone", said Knecht.

Kris Jenner Reportedly Worried That Kylie's Pregnancy Will Hurt Her Career
It's been rumored for months Kimmy is expecting hers and Kanye West 's third child via surrogate , and the baby is supposedly due in January.

"It is believed at this time that these two incidents are related, " Knecht said.

Witness Pat Hannigan told reporters he saw police pull the man from the windshield of the toppled U-Haul van.

The auto struck a police officer standing in front of his patrol vehicle, "sending him flying 15 feet through the air" before crashing into his vehicle, according to a statement by local police. "We know that Canada's strength comes from our diversity, and we will not be cowed by those who seek to divide us or promote fear", he said. One person suffered a fractured skull and was initially in critical condition, but had since been upgraded to stable. This raised doubts in the mind of the police and the driver sensed trouble.

Investigators determined at that time that he did not pose a threat.

Two have been released from hospital.

Degrand initially said was the suspect was the process of making a refugee claim in Canada, but a spokesman with the federal Public Safety Department later clarified that he had already been found to be a refugee by the Immigration and Refugee Board.

Knecht said the suspect drove in the opposite lane, nearly T-boned a vehicle and purposely drove into pedestrians, injuring four.

"No shots were fired".
