Damaged A380 Diverts to Goose Bay

Plane engine blows

A team of investigators and engineers headed to Canada today to inspect an Airbus A380 superjumbo operated by Air France which was forced to make an emergency landing after an engine explosion. Aircraft like the Airbus A350 are certified to fly for several hours on just one engine to reach the next airport for emergency landings.

Video and photo images posted on social media, apparently by passengers or their relatives, showed extensive damage to the front of the outer starboard engine, with part of its external cowling stripped away.

According to Fox News, Air France released a statement praising the flight and cabin crew who "handled this serious incident perfectly". One flight will be aboard an Air France B777-300, and the other aboard a B737, an aircraft specially chartered by Air France.

Air France is making arrangements for two flights to take the passengers from Goose Bay to their final destination.

One of the four engines on the Airbus A380 flight AF66 failed as the plane was flying over western Greenland.

But the university says it is seeing demand now. "It's been ridiculous that we couldn't have caffeinated soda on campus". Jenkins noted that students have always been free to bring their own caffeine-filled beverages onto campus.

As the aircraft landed at Goose Bay Airport, passengers were waiting for hours before they could come out of the plane.

About 90 minutes after the initial impact, the plane landed smoothly in Goose Bay, she said.

The plane was carrying 496 passengers and 24 crew at the time, an Air France spokesperson told AFP news agency.

In response, the airline described the engine as having "serious damage".

The exact cause of what caused the engine failure has not been determined.
