Brigham Young University Ends Ban on Caffeinated Sodas

BYU Dining Services adds Coke to a soda fountain in the Wilkinson Center

BYU has already started selling canned and bottled caffeinated soft drinks on campus (though this is limited to only Coca-cola products).

In a paradigm shifting move, Brigham Young University will soon be offering caffeinated soft drinks. This news also extends to the sale of caffeinated sodas at sporting events on campus.

That change has been pushed by students for at least five years, after the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a reiteration of its teachings on what liquids should pass the lips of its members.

The Utah-based Mormon religion directs its almost 16 million worldwide members to avoid alcohol and hot beverages such as coffee and tea as part of an 1833 revelation from Mormon founder Joseph Smith. "Just the small change of allowing caffeinated beverages - because it's not against our religion - it's high time".

Jenkins noted that students have always been free to bring their own caffeine-filled beverages onto campus. Caffeinated sodas will still not be sold at the two satellite campuses in Jerusalem and Salt Lake City. "I never thought I would see the day so it's exciting". He was one of the first people to buy one.

Three Iranians among seven dead in twin attacks in south Iraq
Mostly shi'ite and concentrating major part of oil production of country, region is strictly surrounded by security forces. Both attacks happened on September 14 near the city of Nasiriyah in southern Iraq's Dhi Qar province.

Even after that, BYU, which is owned and operated by the Mormon Church, declined to sell the soft drinks. Employees don shirts that say, "I'm a caffeine dealer".

But the university says it is seeing demand now. "It's been ridiculous that we couldn't have caffeinated soda on campus".

It will take a longer time before BYU changes its fountain equipment. In a Facebook post, Caffeine Corner said, "Sounds like we're still in business".

The paper describes a trend where "dependence on caffeine consumption has become a humble bragging topic among college students in the LDS culture", and that "most students know of a friend or have heard a story of the person who hides a Diet Coke in her purse in the back of a sacrament meeting".
