United Nations chief: Time to translate nuclear test moratorium into legally binding obligation

Ruling Party Urges Peaceful Resolution of N. Korean Nuclear Issue

40-50 states signed a legally binding nuclear weapons ban treaty on Wednesday.

The treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons will enter into force 90 days after 50 countries have ratified it. Under the treaty, the parties will be obliged "never under any circumstances to develop, test, produce, manufacture, otherwise acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices".

Australia argues that it is protected by an umbrella of deterrence created by United States nuclear weapons.

The US, UK, Russia, France and China are signatories of the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty - the world's earliest nuclear disarmament initiative - while the remaining quartet are not (although North Korea was temporarily, withdrawing from it in 2003).

Meanwhile, Assistant Secretary Bayani Mercado said the adoption of the treaty not only recognized the catastrophic effects of nuclear weapons on humanity and the environment but also reaffirmed the universal aspiration of a world free from such weapons.

"As Prime Minister Trudeau participates at the UN this week, his failure to join more than 120 nations in calling for an end to nuclear weapons is a stain on our country", Ms.

"Nuclear arms offer a false sense of security", the archbishop said.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has called the treaty "wishful thinking" that is "close to irresponsible".

Kate suggestively placed her hand on her stomach as she walked next to her husband, a classic symbol of pregnancy . The Duchess of Cambridge is reportedly 11 weeks pregnant with her third child , a royal insider told Us Weekly .

At the time of writing, some 49 states have signed.

Unfortunately, not a single NATO member nation has ratified the treaty.

Speaking on how to get the nearly 60 countries who boycotted the adoption of the treaty convinced to join the treaty, including the problems associated with the enforcement, Onyeama said it was a question of exposed strategy and trust.

Some experts see the treaty as an expression of the deep concern about the enormous risks posed by nuclear weapons and the growing frustration with the failure of the nuclear-armed states to fulfill their nuclear disarmament commitments.

FILE - In this August 6, 2015, file photo, Kazumi Matsui, right, mayor of Hiroshima, and the family of the deceased bow before they place the victims list of the Atomic Bomb at Hiroshima Memorial Cenotaph during the ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the bombing at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, western Japan. It was adopted at the United Nations Conference on July 7, 2017. The world's existing nuclear powers oppose it, saying a ban could be risky. The bombings of Hiroshima on August 6 of that year and Nagasaki three days later ushered in the nuclear era.

Sue Wareham, board member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, told reporters outside the Canberra building that her lobby group had done all it could through "legitimate channels" to get the government to change its stance.

Also speaking was Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, who said the organization received a cable from Hiroshima on August 30, 1945 describing a "city wiped out", a great number of dead and over 100,000 wounded. May said. "How can we purport to be a country of peacekeepers when we refuse to stand with the global community in calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons?" "Humanity simply can not live under the dark shadow of nuclear warfare, and the vast suffering which we all know would result". Guyana, the Vatican and Thailand are expected to provide signed ratification copies later in the day. But the nuclear powers want no part of it.

The event was planned by an organization of atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima Prefecture and the Hiroshima Congress against A- and H-Bombs, or Hiroshima Gensuikin.
