Powerful 7.1 magnitude natural disaster strikes central Mexico

Earthquake shakes Los Angeles suburb of Westwood, UCLA

An natural disaster has struck Mexico City, jolting buildings and causing them to sway on the anniversary of the 1985 quake that left major destruction.

Earlier in the day, natural disaster drills were held in Mexico City to mark the anniversary of the Michoac√°n quake of 1985, which caused widespread death and injuries as well as catastrophic damage in Mexico City.

At this time, it's unclear what kind of injuries and casualties have come as a result of the massive quake.

On Sept. 7, a temblor hit offshore near Chiapas state with a magnitude of 8.2, according to the Geological Survey and Mexico's National Seismological Service.

Earlier this month, the strongest natural disaster in Mexico's history off the country's Pacific Coast killed dozens of people. But in order to understand just how significant of an event this was, you need to see the videos taken from civilians on the ground as the quake shook and even toppled buildings.

"There are lots of people on the street and folks crying, a little bit beside themselves", Green said.

President Enrique Pena said 27 buildings had collapsed in Mexico City, one of the world's biggest cities.

In Mexico City, thousands of people fled office buildings and hugged to calm each other along the central Reforma Avenue as alarms blared, and traffic stopped around the Angel of Independence monument. According to reports the tremors caused "buildings to sway sickeningly on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major damage to the capital". "We're going to go to a building that fell to see if we can help".

United States president Donald Trump said on Twitter: "God bless the people of Mexico City". Some people dove for cover under desks.

"We don't have an estimate yet from authorities of how many buildings - but just photos and videos from people in the street show there are many buildings collapsed so far", reporter James Fredrick told NPR.

It says the epicenter was near the town of Raboso, about 76 miles (123 kilometres) southeast of Mexico City. A 2013 U.S. Geological Survey study found a 7 percent probability that an 8.0-magnitude quake or greater will take place along the fault sometime within the next 30 years.
