Hurricane Irma pulls ocean away from Bahamas shore

Hurricane Irma has set its sights on Turks and Caicos and is expected to hit Florida by the weekend

On Saturday afternoon, a Twitter user shared a video of the ocean on Long Island in the Bahamas. Footage of a dry Bahamas shoreline hit the internet shortly after Irma swept through the Caribbean Islands.

Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm which ripped through the Caribbean Islands on its way to Florida and has killed at least 24 people, left bare beaches along the coastline of the Bahamas.

Angela Fritz, deputy weather editor of the Washington Post noted that extremely powerful hurricanes, such as Irma can change the shape of the ocean for a period of time.

With Hurricane Irma just starting to create her path of destruction in the U.S., social media users have been left baffled after footage shows the ocean essentially "disappearing". As the storm gobbles water towards its center, it gets pulled from its surroundings.

Footage from the Hurricane Irma-hit Bahamas freaked out netizens on Saturday as the seawater was completely missing from a bay as far as the eye could see. The storm sucked the ocean dry near Long Island, Bahamas, as it continues to strengthen and touch ground in Florida.

While some have speculated the disappearing water could indicate an incoming tsunami, that's not the case here.
