Amazon seeks bids for second headquarters, to invest $5bn

Amazon to add as many as 50000 jobs, searches for second headquarters

Amazon has yet to confirm a location for its second base, although it said it prefers cities or suburban locations with more than one million people.

It said that, including construction, HQ2 would create "tens of thousands of additional jobs and tens of billions of dollars in additional investment in the surrounding community".

"Boston is a technology hub and we have so much going on here in the city, we'd love to explore the opportunity for Amazon, but I think it's very early in process", Walsh told reporters".

It didn't hint about where it might land, but its requirements could rule out some places: It wants to be near a metropolitan area with more than a million people; be able to attract top technical talent; be within 45 minutes of an worldwide airport; have direct access to mass transit; and wants to be able to expand that headquarters to as much as 8 million square feet in the next decade.

Amazon said the new campus will eventually be a "full equal" to its current Seattle headquarters.

A spokesperson for the city of Chicago wouldn't comment on whether it will submit a proposal, but gave the following statement: "Chicago's unmatched workforce, world-class universities and unparalleled access to destinations throughout the world make it the flawless headquarters location for companies large and small". The first phase of the development, scheduled for 2019, will require 500,000 square feet, while the total requirement could reach 8,000,000 square feet beyond 2027.

Dallas said it has already contacted Amazon to express its interest.

Urban or suburban locations with the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent.

Amazon says HQ2 will be a complete headquarters for Amazon - not a satellite office.

"The Project must be sufficiently close to a significant population center, such that it can fill the 50,000 estimated jobs that will be required over multiple years", Amazon said in a seven-page Request for Proposals made public Thursday.

The problem is Amazon's advantage of potentially being the only major tech giant in a new city is that many other companies will follow suit after seeing Amazon's success, he continued.

Amazon is accepting proposals through October 19.

Packages move down a conveyor belt at Amazon's fulfillment center in Baltimore.

Of course, Amazon is also looking for a healthy dose of incentives, including tax exemptions or workforce grants.
