Fake Russian Facebook accounts bought $100000 in political ads

Facebook says shadowy Russian group spent $100000 on 'divisive' adverts during US election

Stamos said that 470 inauthentic accounts spent about $100,000 to buy roughly 3,000 ads.

The vast majority of ads run by these accounts didn't specifically reference the U.S. presidential election, voting or a particular candidate.

About one-quarter of these ads were geographically targeted, and of those, more ran in 2015 than 2016.

Since Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, Facebook has been asked about Russia's meddling in usa politics.

Facebook, which offers a sophisticated level of targeting to advertisers, has been in the center of a storm over the role that it played in propagating fake news and other misleading information during the campaign.

Another $50,000 went to about 2,200 "potentially politically related" ads and might have been bought by Russians in potential violation of USA election law.

Russian-linked pages bought thousands of ads on Facebook around the 2016 election, according to the social network.

Facebook learned about the Russian connection as part of buyers of politically-motivated ads.

The company said its findings regarding Russian Federation have been shared with US authorities investigating the issues, and it says it will continue to work with investigators as necessary.

"There is evidence that some of the accounts are linked to a troll farm in St. Petersburg, referred to as the Internet Research Agency, though we have no way to independently confirm", a Facebook official told WaPo.

Given the USA prohibition on foreign money being spent in elections, Facebook has a legal duty to act if it is aware of similar activity in the future, Fischer said.

Facebook on September 6 revealed the findings in a blog post by its chief security officer and said it was cooperating with federal investigators.

"We know we have to stay vigilant to keep ahead of people who try to misuse our platform", he said.

Facebook has been under the microscope for months to explain how its platform was exploited during the last presidential campaign.

"It is completely unacceptable that Facebook says it will not release the actual ads it showed to its users", Pierre Omidyar, the entrepreneur and eBay founder, wrote on Twitter. That race remains under investigation for potential collusion between Trump's team and a Russian government that USA intelligence agencies stated earlier this year had a "clear preference" for the Republican.
