3-magnitude 'explosion' detected in North Korea, says USGS

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are heading for a showdown over North Korea

Britain's foreign secretary Boris Johnson said: "They (North Korea) seem to be moving closer towards a hydrogen bomb which, if fitted to a successful missile, would unquestionably present a new order of threat", adding that there were no palatable military solutions.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it was too early to determine if a test, if there was one, supported the North's claim that has succeeded in developing a thermonuclear weapon, "much less one that could be mounted on an ICBM and re-enter Earth's atmosphere without burning up". That makes China the United States' largest trading partner in goods.

Mr Trump, who said after last week's missile launch that talking to Pyongyang "is not the answer", tweeted that Sunday's test showed North Korea's "words and actions continue to be very hostile and risky to the United States".

North Korea's first three nuclear tests from 2006 to 2013 were atomic bombs on roughly the same scale as the ones used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which together killed more than 200,000 people. Further economic and trade sanctions, increased diplomatic pressure and boosting military maneuvers or shows of force would likely all be on the table.

Mr Trump has not only led the charge to tighten global sanctions on North Korea; he also imposed recently issued penalties on Chinese and Russian firms thought to be helping the North evade sanctions. But it also spoke of urging North Korea to "face up to the firm will" of the worldwide community to see denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula.

Kono said Japanese officials are already talking to the United States and South Korea about calling an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

China's foreign ministry went so far as to blame the US and South Korea for conducting a large, week-long military drill that has historically provoked Kim.

Following the test, Trump posted a series of tweets suggesting that the United States could use military force against North Korea.

Trump also berated longtime US ally South Korea, saying "South Korea is finding, as I have told them, that their talk of appeasement with North Korea will not work, they only understand one thing!"

US President Donald Trump after attending service for Hurricane Harvey victims, at St. John's Church in Washington on Sunday.

Experts who studied the impact of the natural disaster caused by the explosion - measured by the US Geological Survey at 6.3 magnitude - said that there was enough strong evidence to suggest North Korea has either developed a hydrogen bomb or was getting very close.

Moscow urged all sides involved to hold talks, which it said was the only way to resolve the Korean peninsula's problems. Later on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin was set to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in China. Beijing condemned the test Sunday.

"The Agency continues to closely follow developments in the DPRKs nuclear program, which is a matter of grave concern".

"Possible explosion, located near the site where North Korea has detonated nuclear explosions in the past", read a statement on the USGS website.

"If confirmed as a nuclear test, this act would indicate that the DPRK's nuclear programme is advancing rapidly", CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo said in a statement. "Their words and actions continue to be very hostile and unsafe to the United States", Trump wrote on Twitter.
