North Korea confirms powerful hydrogen bomb test

North Korea Reveals Shocking Images Of Possible H-Bomb Warhead

Experts say it is almost impossible to verify with certainty Pyongyang's claim that it detonated a hydrogen bomb, which is also known as a thermonuclear weapon, or whether it can be used successfully on a missile.

North Korea's regime has "succeeded in making a more developed nuke", according to state news agency KCNA.

Experts and officials have said North Korea could conduct its sixth nuclear test at any time, and that the reclusive country has maintained a readiness at its nuclear test site to conduct another detonation test at any time.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he asked officials to cooperate with the U.S., South Korea, China and Russian Federation.

The explosion caused a 6.3 magnitude tremor at North's nuclear testing site.

Since 2006, North Korea has carried out five nuclear tests, including two previous year.

Veteran North Korea state news anchor Ri Chun Hee hailed the test as a "perfect success" and the final step in attaining a "state nuclear force".

Hours before the test, North Korea's state news agency KCNA had released pictures showing Kim Jong Un inspecting a silver-coloured, hourglass-shaped warhead during a visit to the country's nuclear weapons institute, accompanied by scientists.

Mr Trump also suggested putting more pressure on China, the North's patron for many decades and a vital USA trading partner, in hopes of persuading Beijing to exert more effective leverage on its neighbour.

There was no independent confirmation that the detonation, which drew swift global condemnation, was a hydrogen bomb rather than a less powerful atomic device. State media reported that the test left no trace of radioactive material.

Juche is North Korea's homegrown ruling go-it-alone ideology that is a mix of Marxism and extreme nationalism preached by state founder Kim Il Sung, the current leader's grandfather. The North also test-fired two ICBMs in July and sent another missile soaring over Japan earlier this month, defiantly persisting with its efforts despite United Nations economic sanctions and warnings from the USA that military options are on the table.

"We made clear that we have the ability to defend ourselves and our allies, South Korea and Japan, from any attacks, and our commitments among the allies are ironclad", he said.

North Korea announced Sunday it successfully tested a hydrogen nuclear bomb that can be loaded onto a new intercontinental ballistic missile.

The shape shows a marked difference from pictures of the ball-shaped device North Korea released in March a year ago, and appears to indicate the appearance of a two-stage thermonuclear weapon, or a hydrogen bomb, said Lee Choon-geun, senior research fellow at state-run Science and Technology Policy Institute.

Sunday's test is the country's sixth and most powerful nuclear test, thought it is the first since Trump took office.

North Korea conducted two nuclear tests last year, the last almost a year ago, on the September 9 anniversary of the nation's founding.

The White House will be under global pressure to deliver a coherent response to North Korea.

It flew a Hwasong-12 over northern Japan last week, the first such overflight by a missile capable of carrying nukes, in a launch Kim described as a "meaningful prelude" to containing Guam, the home of major USA military facilities, and more ballistic missile tests targeting the Pacific. But the statement did not say whether the conversation came before or after the North's latest test.

About 28,500 American troops are deployed in South Korea as deterrence against North Korea.
