Aussie tennis brat Nick Kyrgios hi-fives crowd after savage victor

Grigor Dimitrov

- Defending champion Karolina Pliskova pulled off a doubleheader sweep Friday at the Western & Southern Open, reaching the semifinals by winning a pair of matches with little rest in-between.

Australia's Nick Kyrgios has defeated incoming world No.1 Rafael Nadal 6-2 7-5 to surge into the last four of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati.

Kyrgios even went as far as to compare Federer and Dimitrov in his post match press conference: "He's got a great game". But Halep has lost two prior matches this year with a chance to ascend to number one, falling to Jelena Ostapenko in the French Open final and to Konta in a Wimbledon quarter-final after having won the first set in both matches.

Several hours later, Kyrgios cemented his place in the finale by outlasting World No. 31 David Ferrer in a two-hour, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) thriller.

Dimitrov, who was appearing in his second straight Cincinnati final, saved three set points in the second set breaker to reach his first ever Masters final.

But five matches were pushed to Friday, when double duty could come for Nadal, the 15-time Grand Slam champion assured of returning to world number one next week. There's worse things happening in the world right now than me losing.

Unseeded Kyrgios broke Nadal's serve in the opening game of the match and broke again en route to taking the first set in just 25 minutes.

"I don't really want to be remembered as an unbelievable tennis player".

'Of course everybody is destroyed in Spain, including me, ' Nadal said in a post-match interview after the game.

"It was one of the best matches of the year", Muguruza said.

"I love playing here", Dimitrov said on the ATP website.

The 22-year-old Australian will play Grigor Dimitrov for the title after the Bulgarian tamed the big serve of John Isner to win 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (12-10) in Saturday's earlier semi-final. "So I hope to keep it going". "I know it's going to be tough", Kyrgios said.

Ferrer upset Austria's eighth-ranked Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-3, while Isner fired 25 aces in beating USA wild card Jared Donaldson 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 and Dimitrov downed Japan's Yuichi Sugita 6-2, 6-1.
