The man accused of driving a car into a crowd of people in Charlottesville “would proclaim himself as a Nazi,” one of his former classmates said

Fields, 20, was charged with second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and failure to stop after an accident.

Fields is due back in court on August 25. A melee broke out between the two sides followed by the car-ramming that killed Heyer and injured 19 others.

However Fields was rejected from the army, which Weimer said was a serious blow for the young man.

According to NPR, the suspect has been identified as James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio.

In high school, Fields was an "average" student, but had a keen interest in military history, Hitler, and Nazi Germany, said Mr Weimer, his social studies teacher at Randall K Cooper school in Union, Kentucky.

Weimer, himself a former National Guard, helped Fields apply, believing that working with people from different races and backgrounds might soften his white supremacist views.

Investigators said Fields had just attended a white nationalist rally against plans to remove a confederate statue from a park.

In an interview on Saturday, Bloom told the AP she was aware that her son was headed to a rally in Virginia but did not know it was connected to white nationalists.

"He was saying 'I love Adolf Hitler, ' and no one was stopping him", Pohlman said.

"I try to stay out of his political views", she said.

Heyer worked at Miller Law Group PC, which is based in nearby Ruckersville, Virginia, the firm's president, Larry Miller, said in a statement to NBC.

Ms Bloom, who became upset when hearing about what her son was accused of doing, told reporters he did not give her any details about the rally but that she told him "to be careful" and to be peaceful.

On Saturday, hundreds of alt-right neo-Nazis gathered in Charlottesville with tiki torches to protest immigration and promote their white power.

During an interview with ABC News Monday morning, Attorney General Jeff Sessions confirmed those actions are considered an act of domestic terrorism under DOJ statute.
