China Implements UN Sanctions On North Korea

The appointment came amid reports that Trump plans to order probe against China's Intellectual Property Right (IPR) violations to press Beijing to do more to rein its ally North Korea.

The action is likely to escalate tensions with Beijing at a time when Washington has asked for its help on North Korea.

The China Daily said it was unfair for Trump to put the burden on China for dissuading Pyongyang from its actions.

The investigation could take up to a year, according to administration officials, opening the door to a settlement before a possible investigation is launched.

China says it will stop importing North Korean coal, iron ore, fish and other goods in September as it implements United Nations sanctions.

"If the US uses Section 301 (of the Trade Act) to pressure China, countries in China's export chain, including the US, Japan and South Korea, would be affected", said Liu Ligang, Chief Economist for China at Citigroup.

Today, Beijing issued an official ban on the imports effective from tomorrow as it moved to implement the sanctions. "But if China helps us, I feel a lot differently toward trade - a lot differently toward trade".

The US and North Korea have been exchanging military threats since last week after American intelligence found that Kim Jong-un's regime has managed to develop an arsenal of nuclear weapons small enough to fit on a ballistic missile that could reach the US mainland.

Trump has escalated his harsh criticism of North Korea for days, tweeting Friday that the US had military options "locked and loaded".

Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou replaces Wu Dawei, who retired as China's top negotiator in the six-party talks that have been on hold since North Korea withdrew from them in 2009.

The war of words has sparked global concerns, with world leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping urging calm on both sides in a phone call with Trump over the weekend.

Observers said the new sanctions could cost about United States dollars 1 billion loss of revenue for China.

"But instead of advancing the United States' interests, politicizing trade will only acerbate the country's economic woes, and poison the overall China-U.S. relationship".
