Charlottesville : Attacker charged with murder and denied bail in US

Derek Weimer

A man accused of ramming a auto into a crowd of activists protesting a white supremacist rally in the U.S. state of Virginia, had long sympathised with the Nazis, his former school teacher said.

James Alex Fields Jr, of OH, allegedly drove the vehicle into the counter-protesters, killing Heyer as she crossed the street.

He told the judge, "No, sir" when asked if he had ties to the community of Charlottesville.

According to local media reports, he has been charged with second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding, and failure to stop following an accident resulting in death.

The authorities arrested Fields shortly thereafter. According to the educator, Fields had also confided that he was schizophrenic and was prescribed anti-psychotic medications.

"It was obvious that he had this fascination with Nazism and a big idolatry of Adolf Hitler", Weimer said. "It would start to creep out".

Heather Heyer was killed Saturday when police say a man plowed his auto into a group of demonstrators protesting the white nationalist rally.

In a separate incident, two police officers were killed on the same day when their helicopter crashed as they monitored the far-right rally.

Heyer worked at Miller Law Group PC, which is based in nearby Ruckersville, Virginia, the firm's president, Larry Miller, said in a statement to NBC. The group on Sunday denied any association with the suspect.

Web hosting company GoDaddy is evicting a white supremacist site that mocked a Charlottesville, Virginia, victim, calling her a "fat, childless. slut".

While organizers cited the removal of the controversial statue as the reason for the rally, they also vowed to "take America back".

Police have said Heyer was crossing the street Saturday when a vehicle plowed into a group of counterprotesters. Court records show only a single traffic conviction.

Kelly said he knows his photo has gone viral, but he hasn't thought much about the impact, yet.

Weimer said the conversations he had with Fields, who was part of Cooper High School's German club, were complex and pointed to a troubling path. However, Fields never enrolled in any classes, so he was never classified as a student. Trump's proposal to build a border wall with Mexico was particularly appealing to Fields, Weimer said.

Marisa said she doesn't want Fields to be portrayed the wrong way. Fields, now 20, is a 2015 graduate of the school.

Fields has a "control date" to schedule a preliminary hearing on Aug 25.

"She would literally sit in the office and cry at times because she was anxious about what was going to happen to the country", he said. You know, we covered the rise of hitler, he would often say how, you know, hitler's views were right.

"I don't really get too involved", she said.
