Venezuela's new Assembly declares itself superior to all other government bodies

Stop the War Coalition says Tory attacks on Venezuela "cannot be taken at face value" following criticism of left ...

President Nicolás Maduro continued his efforts to shut down opposition to the government when the new constitutional assembly composed exclusively of pro-government delegates convened on Tuesday as well.

Colombia's Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin, along with foreign ministers and representatives from across the Americas, gives a news conference after a meeting to discuss the Venezuelan crisis, in Lima, Peru, August 8, 2017.

Highly concerned that recent developments in Venezuela could lead to further escalation of tensions and hamper a peaceful solution to the crisis, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres again on Tuesday urged the Government and the opposition to relaunch negotiations for the benefit of the Venezuelan people.

The court has sentenced Ramon Muchacho to 15 months in prison for not following an order to remove barricades set up by anti-government protesters in the Chacao district of eastern Caracas.

The opposition is struggling to regain its footing since last week's seating of a loyalist special assembly, which is now busy rewriting the country's constitution.

On Monday, Maradona made a post on Facebook saying "We are Chavistas to the death".

The Lima Declaration released by the ministers upon conclusion of their day-long meeting, included recognition of the National Assembly or Venezuelan Parliament as the only legitimate elected body in the country.

That decree came Tuesday just hours after the assembly delegates took control of a legislative chamber and put up pictures of the late President Hugo Chavez, who installed Venezuela's socialist system. They expressed support for renewed negotiations between the government and opposition, though previous talks have failed.

Venezuela's opposition-controlled legislature is refusing to recognize the new constitutional assembly as well as a new government prosecutor who replaces an outspoken government critic.

The new constitutional assembly has signaled it will act swiftly in following through with Maduro's commands.

"(These sanctions) are a clear violation of worldwide human rights and is an unacceptable interfering effort which has the sole objective of directly affecting the Maduro Government and the Venezuelan people", the statement highlighted.

Those who attacked the base near the city of Valencia said their operation was aimed at starting an insurgency against theleftist Maduro.

Separately, only a few dozen demonstrators heeded the opposition's call to set up traffic-snarling roadblocks Tuesday in Caracas to show their opposition to the new assembly.

The July 30 election of the Constituent Assembly was marred by street violence, in which 10 people died, and charges of fraud brought by the UK-based company that supplied the polling technology.

The assembly was expected to gather at the legislative palace in Caracas for the first time since voting Saturday to remove the nation's outspoken chief prosecutor, a move that drew condemnation from numerous same regional government that are sending representatives to the meeting in Peru's capital.
