World Trade Centre attack victim's remains identified 16 years after terror attack

1641st person killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11 has been identified

The man - whose name officials have withheld at the request of his family - becomes the 1,641st victim of the attacks to be positively identified.

A total of 1,112 people who died (40%) remain unidentified almost 16 years after the terror attack. Sixteen years after the attack, the New York City Medical Examiner's Office said it identified one of the victims.

The office was able to do the retesting with DNA technology acquired earlier this year, spokeswoman Julie Bolcer said.

However, 1,112 people - about 40 percent - who died on 9/11 still remain unidentified, according to the medical examiner's office.

However, during this time, DNA technology has advanced alongside the multi-million dollar effort to try and connect 21,900 found pieces of remains to the lives they represent.

Few full bodies were found in the aftermath of the attack, making it hard for authorities to identify victims.

After some time, the therapeutic analyst's office came to utilize a procedure that includes beating the sections to remove DNA, at that point contrasting it with the workplace's gathering of hereditary material from casualties or their relatives.

In 2013, authorities sifted through truckloads of debris unearthed by construction crews who were working on rebuilding the site. The remains were very hard to analyse as they were affected by extreme factors such as heat from the jet fuel, and the chemicals involved in the resulting explosion and collapse of the buildings. Possible remains of more than 20 victims were recovered.
