Christy Clark resigns as Liberal Party leader

The political landscape in BC is seeing a major shift with Christy Clark stepping down as leader of the Liberals and leaving her role as MLA in Kelowna-West.

She took responsibility for not delivering a majority - the sole job of the party leader during an election campaign - particularly when the Liberals were loaded with cash, were leading in the polls and boasted the best provincial economy in the country.

"I love our party and our province with all my heart - and it's been the honour of a lifetime to serve as leader and premier", said Clark in a media release.

Rustad says the caucus decided Coleman has the right experience in opposition, as well as in government, to do the job. A last minute shift in policy to include key points laid out in election platforms of both the BC NDP and BC Greens did nothing to alter public perception following the throne speech, which paved the road for a non-confidence vote.

"Without a doubt she has made history for British Columbia", said Larson. "I am going to be looking for the person that can best lead British Columbia forward and continue to provide the conservative fiscal approach with a strong social conscience".

"I'm shocked, and I think it's sad that B.C. doesn't get to have the benefit of Christy Clark for another few more years", he said, speaking by phone from Cranbrook.

"She created a team", said Larson.

"She's obviously done some soul-searching and she knows this party is in good hands; we're really deep with the people that we have in the party and she put it out there that she thinks the long term benefit to the party is if she steps aside". She was a sharp critic of the NDP government and was rewarded with the designation of deputy premier along with the education portfolio when she was named to cabinet after the Liberals first victory in 2001.

Such a prospect has unnerved investors in Canada's third-most populous province, not least owners of oil and gas projects such as Kinder Morgan Inc's C$7.4 billion Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, which the New Democratic Party (NDP) has vowed to halt.

"When you look at voting here and internationally, people want something new", he said. After Gordon Campbell announced his exit in 2010, it took about four months for the leadership convention that saw Ms. Clark become leader.

"Me, as an individual, I will value her friendship for the rest of my life". Although she won the most seats in the legislature in the May election, she didn't have a majority of seats. She then ran in the by-election in Kelowna West (formerly Westside-Kelowna) to re-enter the Legislative Assembly.

He said the new government should revise MLA pension plans introduced 10 years ago by the BC Liberals.

The truest signs of leadership, whether it's politics, business or sports, is putting others first, by crediting everyone else for the wins and taking sole responsibility for the loses.
