Police in the U.S. have arrested a Northwestern University professor from IL and an employee of Britain's Oxford University, who were both sought in connection with a fatal stabbing in Chicago last week.

Far from their prestigious campuses, a Northwestern University professor and a University of Oxford finance officer were jailed in the San Francisco area Saturday after eight days as fugitives sought in the death of a young hairdresser in Chicago stabbed repeatedly until the knife broke, police said.

A manhunt had been underway since July 27 when the body of Trenton Cornell-Duranleau was discovered inside Latham's Chicago apartment says the Tribune.

Lathem was arrested in Oakland and Warren was taken into custody in San Francisco, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Their relationship to Cornell-Duranleau is unclear, but Lathem and the victim are listed as friends on Facebook.

He said that once police had "suspicions that the professor and his associate may have fled the Chicago area", several federal agencies were brought in to investigate and a national alert was sent to police departments across the country advising that murder warrants were issued for both men.

Both are expected to be arraigned on first-degree murder charges and extradited to Illinois, CBS News reported. Warren has been suspended from his post as the senior treasury assistant at Somerville College, Britain's Oxford Mail reports.

As police closed in on the pair's position on Friday, it was revealed that Mr Warren and Mr Lathem made a donation to a library in the victim's name in a neighbouring state.

Guglielmi said Warren and Lathem were caught on CCTV leaving the building that night.

'I've never seen where suspects in a homicide would make a donation in the victim's name, ' said Lake Geneva police Lieutenant Edward Gritzner. Both Lathem and Warren are being held on no bond status.

Chicago police said Warren was 56; he was booked into jail as age 49.

Mr. Warren had been working at University of Oxford in the United Kingdom processing paychecks and pensions, The Washington Post reported.

Police say Lathem knew Cornell-Duranleau, who moved to Chicago from MI after receiving his cosmetology license, reports the AP.

"There is no indication of any risk to the Northwestern community from this individual at this time".

"This is now a criminal matter under investigation by the appropriate authorities, and Northwestern University is cooperating in that investigation", according to the statement.
