Marijuana Health Effects

Prescription strength: New York State has licensed five new medical marijuana companies to open dispensaries, including as many as four on Long Island.

Integrating five additional registered organizations into the industry utilizing a phased-in approach was a recommendation of the Department's two-year report on the Medical Use of Marijuana Under the Compassionate Care Act.

The dispensaries will be helmed by the New York City-based company Fiorello Pharmaceuticals.

As Fiorella co-CEO Eric Sirota told reporters, "what distinguishes us from the other companies in the market is that all of our facilities will be located in medical buildings, in academic medical settings".

They join five other organizations operating since the medical marijuana program's launch in January 2016.

NY state has authorized five more organizations to manufacture and dispense medical marijuana to improve patient access to dispensing facilities across the state.

In its 2015 application the company said it picked the site because of its central location and proximity to Route 690 and the state Thruway.

"The addition of these registered organizations will make it easier for patients across the state to obtain medical marijuana, improve the affordability of medical marijuana products through the introduction of new competition, and increase the variety of medical marijuana products available to patients", state Health Commissioner Howard Zucker said. The firm's dispensaries will be located in Monroe, Nassau, New York and Saratoga counties. A proposal by a company called New York Growing Partners to manufacture medical marijuana in Saugerties was turned down at that time, but the state did approve a medical marijuana dispensary, operated by Etain LLC, at a site in the town of Ulster.

PalliaTech previously proposed a manufacturing operation near Plattsburgh and dispensaries in Newburgh, Brooklyn, Rochester and Utica. The medical marijuana company said in its application it planned to lease the site.

As of August 1, 2017, there are 25,736 certified patients and 1,139 registered practitioners participating in the program. Since then the number of NY patients certified for the drug has grown from 14,7992 to 25,736, a 72 percent increase.
