Charlie Gard Hospital Says Staff Have Received Death Threats

Charlie Gard's parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard arrive at the Royal Courts of Justice in London where the hearing will resume into the case of their terminally-ill baby Friday

They have been subjected to abuse online, in the street and in the hospital itself, said Great Ormond Street chief Mary MacLeod.

In a statement, she said numerous messages were menacing, including death threats, and that the hospital was in close contact with the police.

The hospital believes that 11-month-old Charlie has suffered irreversible brain damage that treatment can not fix.

The 10-month old baby was born "perfectly healthy" on August 4, a year ago but around a month later his parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates noticed that he was less able to lift his head and support himself in comparison with other babies of a similar age.

The family's plight has drawn many supporters who have stage noisy protests outside the court.

Charlie's parents then took the case to the Court of Appeal which was heard on May 23 with the court dismissing the appeal two days later.

She has condemned those who have carried out the abuse as the hospital, saying that though emotions over the case of baby Gard are running high it can be "no excuse" for attacking staff who devote their lives to ill children.

The pre-hearing Friday was the latest step in his parents' long legal battle to give Charlie, who suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome and can not breathe unaided, an experimental treatment.

"However, in recent weeks the GOSH community has been subjected to a shocking and disgraceful tide of hostility and disturbance".

Charlie Gard's case is a heart-breaking one.

But Charlie's parents have garnered support from President Trump, Pope Francis and USA lawmakers. As The Guardian reports, the Great Ormond Street Hospital has now received thousands of abusive messages from those opposed to removing Charlie Gard from life support.

British and European courts have so far backed the doctors' position, ruling that transferring Charlie to the US would prolong suffering without a realistic prospect of success. We fully understand that there is intense public interest, and that emotions run high. The parents said at the hearing it was the first time they were being told about the latest results in the crucial test of Charlie's brain function.

At a pre-court hearing on Friday, a lawyer for the hospital, Katie Gollop, said that the results of the child's latest brain scans make for "sad reading", the Associated Press reported.

Columbia University neurology professor Michio Hirano visited Charlie in London last Monday and Tuesday to examine him and meet with doctors from the hospital.
