Australian woman shot dead by USA police

Justine Damond also known as Justine Ruszczyk from Sydney is seen in this 2015

The Star Tribune, citing sources with knowledge of the incident, reported that Damond called 911 to report a possible assault in her alley and was in her pajamas talking to one of the officers on the driver's side of the squad auto. A man who identified himself as Damond's stepson said she was killed after calling police to report a possible crime.

Noor and the other officer have been placed on administrative leave, according to police.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges called the shooting "tragic" and said she was "heartsick" and "deeply disturbed" by it. The police officers who responded to the Saturday night 911 call were equipped with body cameras, the press release said, but the cameras had been switched off at the time the incident occurred. The group's executive director, Teresa Nelson, said the officers failed to obey department rules by not having their body cameras on. While the pair was not legally husband and wife just yet, Ruszczyk was preferred to be referred to by her would-be husband's surname, Damond.

Justine's Facebook page says they were set to get married next month, although she was already using his last name.

The Star Tribune said the woman was Justine Damond, from Sydney, Australia. According to her fiance's 22-year-old son, Zach Damond, she had called police to report a possible assault in an alleyway behind their home.

Ms Damond's death is being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, not the Minneapolis Police Department. He said she had called police for help after hearing a noise.

"Basically my mum was shot for reasons I don't know", Zach said in a video posted after the incident Sunday. "She was the sweetest soul that I've ever met".

Damond was originally a veterinarian, but worked as a life coach and trainer of yoga and meditation.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy and officialy release the victim's identity.

Another woman in the video, Bethany Bradley with Women's March Minnesota, said police were not being transparent or sharing information with the family.

"She believed we have more power over our circumstances - even our genes - than we have been taught", Davis-Suggs said.
