Boris Johnson flies in to Qatar to sort out Gulf crisis

- In another statement made by the German foreign minister on the demands made by the four countries calling for combating terrorism, the German foreign minister said that "We did not find any of the demands submitted that may affect the sovereignty of the State of Qatar".

The four Arab states have cut diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar, which they also accuse of allying with their regional arch-foe Iran.

His Highness the Emir and the visiting minister reviewed facets of bilateral strategic ties and the means to enhance them in different fields, particularly bilateral cooperation in Qatar's hosting of the 2022 World Cup.

They vowed to take further political, economic and legal steps to tighten the screws on Doha.

Shutting down the Doha-based Al Jazeera broadcaster, severing diplomatic ties with Iran, closing down a Turkish military base in Qatar and paying an unspecified sum in reparations were some of the demands that Qatar had received. That might have a negative impact on Qatar's sovereign credit fundamentals.

In response, Qatar has dismissed as "baseless" the Saudi-led bloc's accusations that it supports terrorism and interferes in their internal affairs.

The boycott put in place by the countries emerged from Qatar's support for and financing of terrorism, al-Jubeir explained to DW as a sidenote during this weekend's meeting of the leading industrialized and developing nations, Deutsche Welle reported.

In a statement attributed to an unnamed senior foreign ministry official released later Friday, Qatar called allegations made by the quartet against it false and tantamount to "defamation in contradiction with the established foundations of global relations".

Several countries, including the United States, have urged the Arab states to resolve their differences.

"We've become increasingly concerned that the dispute is at an impasse at this point", The Post quoted State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as saying.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has flown to Kuwait and Qatar to try and bring an end to the diplomatic crisis in the Gulf region. He is expected to visit Qatar and Kuwait during his trip.
