Trump pledges $50M to Ivanka's World Bank initiative

Saturday's photo of Ivanka briefly filling the president's seat was posted on Twitter by Svetlana Lukash, a Russian official attending the G20 summit.

A White House official tried to play down the incident, telling Agence France-Presse that Ivanka had just "briefly joined the main table when the President had to step out".

Cabinet officials usually replace the president at sessions when a stand-in is needed.

Also at the G20, Donald Trump and his daughter spoke at an event in which the president announced the US would commit $50 million toward a fun to empower women.

Ivanka Trump joined World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim on the sidelines of the Group of 20 world leaders' summit in Hamburg, Germany, to launch the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative.

A White House official confirmed Ivanka Trump sat in for Mr. Trump when the president of the World Bank began addressing the session.

The president's daughter has received no shortage of criticism from both progressive and conservative observers since taking an active role in her father's administration.

Mr Trump's controversial views on immigration are widely out of step with many of his fellow leaders at the G20 summit.

When the president later addressed the gathering, he read from prepared remarks, "I'm very proud of my daughter Ivanka". Her comments drew swift criticism because they made little sense coming from someone who has the US president's ear. "And it is known that she works at the White House and carries responsibility for certain initiatives".

The initiative was launched here by World Bank President Jim Yong Kim in the presence of Ivanka Trump and her father as also G20 host Angela Merkel and other world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde. Trump herself has claimed she doesn't want to be involved in politics.

Ambassador Nikki Haley said Trump had gone into the meeting "to basically look him in the eye, let him know that, yes, we know you did it and cut it out".
