Doha Defiant As Saudi-Led Bloc Warns Of 'New Measures'

Meeting in Cairo to decide the next steps in the crisis which opposes them to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt, represented by their respective foreign ministers, rejected Doha's response and pointed out they will hold another meeting in Bahrain to decide the next step.

The US also has a large military base in Qatar and the Pentagon has voiced support for Qatar's fight against Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria and Iraq.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told reporters that Qatar's response was "generally negative" and failed to "lay the foundation for Qatar's reversal of the policies it pursues".

The foreign affairs think tank called for a public inquiry into the role of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations.

Doha's response says that Qatar is not the only Arab country that maintains relations with Iran, and the Arab countries, for their part, must also follow this requirement and reduce the level of diplomatic representation in Tehran, according to the Qatari press.

Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani, at London's Chatham House think-tank, said that Doha was continuing to call for dialogue to settle the row.

Despite the optimism from those in the Europe and the USA, officials from the countries that accuse Doha of financing and promoting extremism say that Qatar's rejection of their demands means additional measures are now being discussed.

Qatar earlier in the day accused Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt of "clear aggression" and said the accusations cited when they severed ties a month ago "were clearly designed to create anti-Qatar sentiment in the West".

UAE's Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan used a harsher tone in his criticism of Qatar, saying it is only interested in "destruction, incitement, extremism and terrorism".

The bloc's demands to Qatar include shutting down the Al Jazeera channel and scaling down ties with Iran, as well as handing over individuals wanted for terrorism and aligning itself politically and economically Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC).

The ban on its citizens moving out of Qatar was announced on Monday along with other drastic measures undertaken by the government to face the deteriorating economic and social situation in the country, Khaleej Times reported.

"We're not doing this because we want to hurt Qatar, we're doing this to help Qatar", Adel bin Ahmed al-Jubeir said.

US President Donald Trump spoke with the Egyptian President, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, on Wednesday, "urging all parties to negotiate constructively to resolve the dispute".

Existing sanctions, including a land and air blockade, would remain in place, the statement said.
