How Republicans want to punish sanctuary cities (including those in NJ)

Rep. Justin Amash Only Republican to Vote Against Kate’s Law AP J. Scott Applewhite by Sean Moran30 Jun 20170 30 Jun 2017 30 Jun 2017

On Thursday afternoon, the House passed Kate's Law on a 257 to 167 vote and the sanctuary cities bill on a 228 to 195 vote.

HR 3003 seeks to eliminate federal funds from the Department of Justice and National Security to sanctuary jurisdictions "that do not comply with federal arrest warrants", Univisión reported.

The No Sanctuary for Criminals Act would withhold certain federal grant money from cities and counties that prohibit their officers from cooperating with ICE. "The House leadership is rushing the bills to the floor just a few days after making them public and never bringing either before the Judiciary Committee".

Trump argued the bills would close "dangerous loopholes exploited by criminals, gang members, drug dealers, killers, terrorists", and told the family members gathered that they'd "lost the people that you love because our government refused to enforce our nation's immigration laws".

Kate's Law would increase the maximum penalties for criminal aliens who reenter the United States illegally. Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, the man accused of her murder (he's pleaded not guilty), served a sentence in federal prison for reentering the U.S. illegally after being deported.

According to The Hill, Democrats plan to vote block against the sanctuary law, "but the presidency of the bench would have given freedom to decide on the 'Kate's Law'".

House Republicans joined President Donald Trump on Thursday afternoon in declaring war on sanctuary cities - passing legislation targeting the cities' funding while hammering a message of the dangers posed by undocumented immigrants.

It also requires that localities comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests to detain suspects for extra time, since some jurisdictions now don't always cooperate. One would cut off some federal grants from so-called sanctuary cities that limit cooperation with immigration authorities; the other would impose tougher sentences on criminals who have entered the US illegally multiple times.

As for the blatantly illegal sanctuary-city movement, Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan said this week he supports letting victims of criminal aliens to sue sanctuary city officials who allowed the criminals to stay.

Australian Muslims bring Ramadan to Sydney
Scholars will start watching today for the new moon to appear to mark the end of the month-long Islamic fasting season. Traditionally, it is celebrated for three days and is an official holiday in all Muslim-majority countries.

The bill would also allow federal authorities to refuse to transfer individuals into state or local custody if a state or locality is not in compliance with the No Sanctuary Act.

During a speech at the Energy Department on Thursday, Trump said that if the bills were sent to his desk, he would "give them the fastest approval, the fastest signature, that you have ever seen".

During his floor remarks, Barletta discussed meeting the family of Derek Kichline, a 29-year-old father of three young children who in 2006 was murdered while working on his truck in Hazleton by an illegal immigrant who had been released by law enforcement a number of times, including by the sanctuary city of NY.

Both bills represent steps by the Trump administration and their allies to crackdown on illegal immigration.

Kate's Law calls for sentences of up to 25 years for deported criminals who are caught reentering and have committed serious crimes.

Twenty-four House Democrats voted for the measure named after Steinle, as Trump praised passage of these bills.

"It's time to support our police to protect our families and to save American lives and also to start getting smart", Trump said.

The House bills face a major obstacle in the Senate, where Republicans have only 52 seats and need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.
