Federal Bureau of Investigation finds vehicle tied to U of I scholar's disappearance

The Campus and Champaign-Urbana community has been rocked by the disappearance of Yingying Zhang, a visiting scholar who was picked up in a vehicle on June 9th and has not been heard from since.

Local police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said her case is top priority.

University police said Zhang had just gotten off a bus before the four-door hatchback approached her. Zhang can be seen standing by a tree as a black Saturn Astra pulls up next to her.

Yingying Zhang, a Chinese scholar studying at the University of IL, disappeared a few weeks after arriving at the university. "The University of Illinois Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation have received numerous leads regarding the vehicle, and we are announcing we have located the vehicle." the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a news release.

"The Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Chicago has been in close contact with the university, the police department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

The case of missing University of IL scholar Yingying Zhang continues to draw national attention, with a live report from the Quad by CNN this morning. The 26-year-old disappeared on June 9 when she was on her way to sign an apartment lease. Security cameras showed Zhang getting into a vehicle meeting that description on W. Clark St. and N. Goodwin Ave/ in Urbana about 2:04 p.m. on Friday June 9.

The FBI announced in a press release Tuesday that the vehicle had been found after authorities received "numerous leads", although Zhang's location is still unknown.

The 26-year-old agricultural sciences student was about six weeks into her studies when she went missing at the University of IL.

Zhang's family has partnered with Champaign County Crime stoppers to provide a $40,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, CNN reported.

Zhang's father, Ronggao Zhang, travelled from Nanping, China, to the U.S. to find his daughter.
