Lewis Hamilton claims stunning Azerbaijan GP pole with last gasp effort

Lewis Hamilton took a brilliant pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix ahead of Valtteri Bottas on Saturday, with Mercedes securing a convincing 1-2 as rival Ferrari lagged behind.

Hamilton had been rather quiet in the practice sessions, but seemed to cruise to the fastest lap in Q1 and Q2, but made a mistake on Q3 by running wide at Turn 16 on his quick lap, ending up behind Bottas.

Two weeks after cutting Vettel's title lead to 12 points, Hamilton is also in flawless position to move even closer in Sunday's race at 2pm BST after his Ferrari rival struggled to fourth.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who dominated Friday practice, qualified fifth but his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo was down in 10th after hitting a wall. "It's not about being greedy, it's about having that right balance; it's basically like a see-saw and I had a ideal balance between aggressiveness and taking too much out".

On my final lap in Q3 I was going about three tenths quicker than my best time but then I lost gear sync in the second sector, it cost me a couple of tenths which was frustrating and meant we could not challenge for third.

The pole is Hamilton's second in succession and puts him second on the all-time Formula One list behind Michael Schumacher on 68.

Hamilton made a mistake on his first lap in final qualifying and was anxious he would not be able to make amends when a crash halted the session.

"That was one of the most exciting laps I have had all year", said an ecstatic Hamilton.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane would love England captaincy
I was just trying to do my best for the team. "It is about standing up and being counted and we did that today". However, Kane slammed in at the far post deep into stoppage time to break the hearts of the Tartan Army.

"The first lap I easily had the time, but I made a mistake in the last corner". "A lot of pressure".

"That created a lot of pressure because we've been struggling to get heat into the tyres and we don't know if it's a one-lap tyre, so it was all or nothing".

"We would have loved to have had more laps this morning".

Sebastian Vettel: "The result is okay, but obviously I am not entirely happy and this qualifying didn't help. A big thank you to the team who stayed late last night to get the vehicle to where it is today - they did a fantastic job". I was like, please be enough. "Tomorrow will be a hard race but we are in the best position to start". "I'm not a big fan of excuses, so I could have done a bit better".

At the other end of the F1 spectrum, the misery continued for McLaren as Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne were eliminated from the first part of qualifying.

Romain Grosjean was 17th for Haas, struggling to find a balance, while Sauber's Marcus Ericsson was 18th.

However, beleaguered McLaren-Honda will be spared a back-row lockout by the luckless Jolyon Palmer, who was unable to take part in qualifying after an engine fire in his Renault in final practice.

Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat ended Q2 in P11, 0.435 secs adrift of a place in the top-ten shootout - and 0.161secs up on team-mate Carlos Sainz.
