French President Emmanuel Macron headed for overwhelming parliamentary majority

French President Emmanuel Macron attends a meeting at the Elysee Palace in Paris France

Emmanuel Macron's centrist La Republique En Marche is projected to win a huge majority in the French Parliament, according to exit estimates compiled for CNN affiliate BFMTV by Elabe. When added together with the party's ally, MoDem, they have a combined 32.4 percent, giving much support to the newly elected president.

He has drawn candidates from a cross-section of society with a former bullfighter, a Nobel Prize victor and a an ex-fighter pilot all hoping to win a seat.

That would give France's youngest leader since Napoleon a powerful mandate with which to make good on campaign pledges to revive France's fortunes by cleaning up politics and easing regulations that investors say hobble the euro zone's second biggest economy.

The lower bound of the projections shows a still-enormous majority, with 415 seats, ensuring a strong hand for the new President. (LREM, also known as En Marche!) is on course to win one of the largest parliamentary majorities in post-war France's history after last night's first round of voting.

Far-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, who came in a strong fourth place in the presidential vote with almost 20 percent support, is running for a parliamentary seat in the southern city of Marseille.

The conservative Republicans had 16 per cent, the far-right National Front 14 per cent, the far-left party of Jean-Luc Melenchon had 10 per cent and the Socialists - who dominated the outgoing National Assembly - with just seven per cent. The Socialist Party presidential candidate, Benoît Hamon, lost his seat in the Assembly-part of a rout that will likely see his party drop as many as 150 seats.

But with Macron's centrists sweeping the boards, Les Republicains still stand to lose up to half their seats, and are forecast to return 95 to 132 deputies.

Gerrymandering gave GOP 1 extra legislative seat
The AP analysis addressed how much of that is caused by voter preference and how much is caused by partisan gerrymandering. That was especially true after the 2010 census, when new Republican majorities took control of the redistricting process.

The Chinese player is trying to complete a MI sweep after winning the LPGA Volvik Championship three weeks ago in Ann Arbor. Su Oh leads the two Australians who made the cut, the Victorian adding a third round of 65 to move into a share of 18th.

"Despite the abstention, the message of the French has no ambiguity: For the third consecutive time, millions of you confirmed your attachment to the president of the republic's project to renew, unite and win back", said Philippe, whom Macron brought in from the mainstream, right-leaning Republican Party.

Runner-up in France's presidential election, Ms Le Pen urged "patriotic" voters to turn out en masse in the second round on 18 June and boost her party's small presence in the National Assembly.

Turnout was low, interior ministry data showed.

Both the Republican and Socialist parties, which have traditionally governed during the time of the Fifth Republic, struggled with turnout, which was projected at 49.5% by Elabe.

The BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris said everything suggested Mr Macron has won another crushing victory, with the only significant opposition coming from the centre-right Republicans.

Otherwise, all contenders who get at least 12.5 percent of the votes of registered voters advance to the second round. Le Pen had campaigned for France to quit the single currency - a move unpopular even among many National Front supporters.

After being sworn in, Macron immediately started up his "New Deal" at home, from reform on labor law to the establishment of anti-terrorism center, and the enactment of new anti-corruption rules, all of which caught the hearts of French people and impressed them with pragmatic reforms. Unlike Macron, however, they all came from long- established parties.
