White House discussing moving Spicer to senior communications role

Senate judiciary probe may review obstruction of justice

The White House will address the issue of the existence of any possible recordings between President Donald Trump and former FBI Director James Comey "probably" this week, press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday.

Last week, Spicer and White House chief of staff Reince Priebus contacted conservative commentator Laura Ingraham about the role of press secretary and Daily Mail editor David Martosko about the role of communications director, according to Politico. "If he can't come out and answer the questions and they're not going to do this on camera or audio, why are we even having these briefings or these gaggles in the first place?"

Reuters also reported on Monday afternoon that the White House is considering its options, but no move is "imminent". This White House has cut back the number of briefings, virtually eliminated the presidential press conference, stopped releasing the White House visitor logs, and now they are forbidding recording of the press conferences. Comey has said, "Lordy, I hope there are tapes".

Primary Tuesday - Polls Open at 6 AM
The attorney general race will have Democrat Mark Herring, the incumbent, facing Republican John Adams in the November 7 election. The race has been framed as a reboot of the Bernie Sanders-Hillary Clinton contest, but the comparison is not a flawless fit.

The White House has suggested radical changes to the daily press briefing in the past, at one point threatening to move it away from the White House entirely. Deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who has frequently filled in for Spicer, has told people that she doesn't want the job of press secretary, according to a source close to her.

"Spicer should be elevated and if he's not, I would not blame him for leaving", a White House official told Politico. "We're standing at the White House and they bring us into the briefing room here at the White House and they won't answer these questions on camera or let us record the audio".

"This isn't how we do things in this country but for whatever reason we're all going along with it". "He'll make another comment today at the technology summit".
