United Nations refugee agency: Record 65.6 million people displaced worldwide

Canada contributes $86M more to assist South Sudan famine, civil war crisis

Every year thousands of families forced to leave their homes due to natural calamities and wars.

"At the end of 2016, there were 65.6 million people forcibly displaced worldwide", the United Nations refugee agency said in a statement, stressing that this was a "new unprecedented high".

The 2016 report showed that the number of refugees worldwide reached 22.5 million, the most ever.

As in numerous less-developed countries that host most of the world's refugees, the newcomers are encouraged to become assets to the economy.

However, the total number seeking safety across global borders as refugees topped 22.5 million, the highest number seen since UNHCR was founded in 1950.

This is "the highest figure since we started recording these figures", UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi told reporters ahead of the report launch.

Hotspots continue to produce refugees around the globe, but two conflicts stand out for the number of people who have been forced to flee their home countries, according to the UNHCR report.

Syria accounts for by far the largest share of total displaced persons worldwide, with a total of 12 million people displaced internally or living outside the country as refugees.

- Turkey hosts the largest number of refugees (2.9 million) followed by Pakistan (1.4 mln) and Lebanon (1 mln).

South Sudan, with a little over a quarter, has the next-biggest proportion - and fastest growing displaced population overall, the agency said.

Unaccompanied or separated children - mainly Afghans and Syrians - lodged some 75,000 applications in 70 countries in 2016.

This was announced by the Agency for refugees of the United Nations.

Syria alone has sent more than 5.5 million people seeking safety in other countries, including 825,000 just a year ago, making it the world's biggest producer of refugees.

Canada announced an additional contribution of $86 million to assist starvation and war ravaged South Sudan. Syria, Iraq, and the still very significant displacement inside Colombia were the biggest internal displacement situations, nonetheless the problem of internal displacement is a worldwide one and accounts for nearly two thirds of the global forced displacement total. The country allows refugees to work and travel freely, access Ugandan social services and gives them a plot of land to live on, and another to farm.

The report showed that 84 percent of all refugees who crossed borders went to low- or middle-income countries at the end of 2016, and that roughly 1 in 3 was hosted in the poorest countries, which can least afford the burden. "At the same time, they are not adequately funding reception of refugees in poor host countries", Egeland said.

"We have to do better for these people". The report says even this number is likely to underestimate the true figure. Significant numbers of refugees in Uganda also came from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (205,400), Burundi (41,000), Somalia (30,700), and Rwanda (15,200).
