Republicans demonstrate hypocrisy over health care legislation

Percentage of people coverd by medicaid

If chosen, it would be a small, but significant change from the House bill that could have a major impact on whether moderate lawmakers ultimately vote for the Senate's version of the Obamacare repeal. Doing it that way only requires a simple majority vote, meaning at least 50 of the 52 Republican senators would have to vote for it.

No draft bill has yet been made available, though a variety of details have emerged in recent weeks on how Republicans might alter a House-passed health bill.

The strategy is a 180-degree shift from the Republican position during the 2009-2010 debate on Barack Obama's health care reforms, when the party demanded transparency at every step of the extended process. But they were also promised that most of the new customers would be "young invincibles" - healthy Americans between 18-35 who would jump at the chance to purchase cheap, subsidized insurance.

Amidst mounting frustration about Republicans' secretive deliberations to repeal Obamacare, Democrats plan to throw sand in the gears of the Senate to try to force a more public debate.

For the last two months, congressional Republicans have demonstrated hypocrisy of the highest order concerning health care legislation.

"I don't think any individual has read the whole bill", Rep. Thomas Garrett (R-VA) said in a CNBC article, referring to the AHCA before House Republicans passed it last month.

The aide added that Democrats would also initiate parliamentary procedures "to highlight the difference between the open process used to pass the Affordable Care Act and the process Republicans are pursuing now". Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, Patty Murray, D-Washington and Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, sent a letter to top Republicans asking that they schedule hearing to discuss, debate and hear testimony about "the health care bill that you are now drafting in secret".

The fight for healthcare reform is a more prominent issue than alleged ties with Russian Federation or obstruction of justice, aides told Politico, but moderate Republicans, however, have said the comment could help them pass the health legislation. Patrick Toomey and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell while talking to reporters after the weekly Senate Republican Caucus policy luncheon in Washington, on July 30, 2013. Write to Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Bob Corker (R-South Carolina), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), and Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana). But GOP senators still disagree on a number of key issues, such as what to do with Obamacare's Medicaid expansion, taxes and tax credits.

"I think it's being written, uh, by someone somewhere but I'm not aware of who or where", Sen. Doctors and hospitals, on the other hand, could face a surge in uninsured patients if millions fewer Americans have health coverage.

Democrats have recently ramped up their criticism of the GOP for attempting to pass such momentous and potentially devastating legislation without revealing any of their plans to the public.
