USA military service members in Afghanistan injured in insider attack

Afghanistan US Troop Surge

Two so-called insider attacks, in which a soldier in an Afghan National Army uniform turns his weapon on foreign troops, in as many weeks have killed three USA soldiers and wounded another seven. A week earlier, a Taliban infiltrator killed three US troops in eastern Afghanistan.

The US soldiers were evacuated after the "insider attack" a spokesman for the US military command said. Araam added that the soldiers returned fire and killed the attacker.

Camp Shaheen, where the 209th Corps is based, was also the site of a large Taliban attack in April that left hundreds of Afghan soldiers dead.

Last month, in the southern province of Kandahar, about 60 soldiers were killed when the extremists attacked their bases, mostly at night.

Taliban took responsibility of the incident and said that Afghan soldier who killed United States soldiers belonged to Taliban group.

In the past, the Taliban has claimed to have "thousands of fully armed martyrdom seekers" at its disposal to conduct attacks inside Afghanistan and has provided some information on the structure of its "martyrdom units", "martyrdom-seekers battalion", and "suicide groups".

Such incidents remain relatively rare amid the close cooperation between Afghan and foreign forces, but it is likely to draw increased scrutiny from the Pentagon as it plans to boost troop numbers in Afghanistan. Another Afghan soldier was wounded. The mission said some USA soldiers might have been hurt. There has been no causality reported by the US Troops. It is not always clear if the attackers are rogue members of the Afghan forces or are infiltrators wearing Afghan Army uniforms.

Saturday's incident is the second insider attack in just one week.

At least one Afghan soldier was killed and another wounded, the US official said.

President Trump recently gave James Mattis, the secretary of defense, the authority to increase US troop levels in the country - and "right now, this new troop request is being worked by the commander in Afghanistan, the National Security Council under H.R. McMaster and senior leaders at the Pentagon", NPR's Tom Bowman told All Things Considered.
