Rosenstein may need to recuse himself from Russia probe

Thune: No Trump 'Witch Hunt,' Mueller a 'Man of Integrity'

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has privately acknowledged he may need to recuse himself from matters relating to the probe into Russian Federation and last year's U.S. election, given that he could become a potential witness in the investigation, ABC News reported on Friday, citing unnamed sources. Was it Rosenstein, who wrote the memo criticizing Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server that Trump initially cited in firing Comey on May 9?

US President Donald Trump wrote on his Twitter account that he is "being investigated for firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director by the man who told me to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation director!"

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has privately acknowledged he may need to recuse himself from matters relating to the Russian Federation probe, given that he could become a potential witness in the investigation, ABC News reported on Friday, citing unnamed sources. Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller on May 17 as special counsel to head the inquiry into the Russian Federation matter. Recent news reports have suggested Trump sought all three officials' help in pressuring FBI Director James Comey to drop his investigation into Mr Flynn.

Mr Comey, who had been leading one of several Russian Federation inquiries, testified to Congress last week that the president had pressured him to drop an inquiry into links between Mr Flynn and Russian Federation.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment, as did a Justice Department spokesperson.

Puerto Rico casts symbolic vote for statehood
No clear majority emerged in the first three referendums, with voters nearly evenly divided between statehood and the status quo. Justice Department told The Associated Press that the agency has not reviewed or approved the ballot's revised language.

Trump spent Friday morning touting his economic policies and criticizing the investigation. Since then, Mueller, who served as FBI director before Comey, took over the investigation. "Witch Hunt", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Less than an hour later, Trump sent out another tweet, this one aimed directly at Rosenstein.

Trump on Friday said the person conducting that probe was the individual who had told him to dismiss James Comey, who had been at the head of the bureau from 2013 until he was sacked early last month.

Mr Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mr Mueller.

The tweet represented a remarkable show of frustration by a serving President, who is making no secret of his emotions as an investigation that started out as an effort to understand Russian meddling in the election appears to be moving ever closer towards his inner circle and narrowing in on his own conduct.
