Rory McIlroy hits back after accused of being 'bored' by Steve Elkington

Watch Rory Mc Ilroy give his reaction to Sky Sports after he missed the cut at the US Open for the second year running

Elkington got roasted by the far more accomplished McIlroy.

McIlroy responded with his own tweet about 30 minutes later.

While he believes McIlroy is the world's most gifted golfer but suggested that he's "bored" with the sport, adding that not having Tiger Woods to compete with has had a negative impact on the 28 year-old.

So, in on-brand, off-the-cuff fashion, Elkington tied Rory's "boredom" to a dollar figure, and McIlroy chirped back.

The tweet was accompanied by a screenshot of his Wikipedia page listing his achievements in the game. The Northern Irishman then won the Open Championship and US PGA in 2014, meaning he needs only to win the Masters to become the sixth player to complete a career grand slam. But these days, the 54-year-old Australian is mainly finding himself in the news for making controversial comments on Twitter. "It was 5 mill".

But Elkington wasn't done, despite being shown the door by the No. 2 ranked golfer in the world.

Go and lie down Steve Elkington, you're done.

"That's why jack designed 100's of golf courses...and it's knew...mustn't have taught grammar in the 50's", McIlroy replied.

He also said prize money was so poor in Nicklaus' day that the legend's main source of income was his golf course design business.

After missing the cut by four strokes at Erin Hills, McIlroy was called out by former pro Steve Elkington for being "so bored playing golf...without Tiger..."
