Evacuations as cyclone approaches Bangladesh

300,000 evacuated as cyclone makes landfall in Bangladesh

Cyclone Mora has stuck Bangladesh, lashing the country's south-eastern coast with rain and winds.

At least six persons were killed as Cyclone Mora made landfall in Bangladesh yesterday, damaging several houses, with authorities scrambling to evacuate over half a million people from the coastal areas.

The numbers have swelled since 2012, and in October and November of past year about 65,000 more arrived after a crackdown by Myanmar's army.

Away from the camps, authorities had evacuated almost 600,000 people to cyclone shelters, schools and offices after raising the highest number 10 weather danger alert.

More than 200 000 people have been evacuated in Cox's Bazar districts and 20 000 houses damaged in Cox's Bazar town, St Martin's Island, Kutubdia and Teknaf.

Uddin said the repairs in the district would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The great danger signal No. 10 has been sounded for all the districts and ports where fishing boats, trawlers and maritime vessels over the north bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.

Television footage showed that many island residents who were moved to safety in cyclone shelter centers started returning home after the wind speed receded. Meanwhile all flights in and out of Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport have been suspended till this afternoon.

Community leaders said damage to the camps was extensive and there had been no attempt to evacuate the Rohingya.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall warning along with strong gusty winds has also been issued in India in parts of West Bengal and northeastern states.

Large camps have been set up in Cox's Bazar for hundreds of thousands of ethnic Rohingya who have fled violence in neighbouring Myanmar.

A total of 88 medical units, 6,010 local volunteers and 15,000 Red Crescent volunteers were on alert, while about 50,000 more volunteers were on standby in 19 coastal districts, said Abu Syed Mohammad Hashim, director of the Disaster Management Department.

"The winds are strong and people there live in flimsy structures, so we're anxious".

At the southern end of the Bay of Bengal, Sri Lanka has been experiencing heavy monsoon rains and severe flooding, which have left at least 160 people dead and dozens more missing.
