Cleveland fires 1 officer, suspends 2nd in Rice shooting

Timothy Loehmann, the Cleveland police officer who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014, was sacked on Tuesday, the city announced at a news conference.

Officer Loehmann, who shot and killed the 12-year-old, was sacked Tuesday for inaccuracies on his job application, while Officer Garmback, who drove the patrol auto, was suspended in the case for violating a tactical rule.

After that, Williams ordered a committee to determine if the officers violated department rules.

Loehmann was sacked for inaccurate details on his job application, not for the Rice shooting.

Why can't Black kids be kids without fear of getting killed by someone who is supposed to serve and protect?

Loehmann was sacked because he wasn't truthful on his job application, Williams said.

The Cleveland Scene reports that Loehmann was in the process of being fired for "dismal performance" after the shooting, but was given the opportunity to resign first.

China installs rocket launchers on disputed South China Sea island
The South China Sea has become the world's most contested region with China claiming nearly the entire water body. China has said the tribunal has no jurisdiction over sovereignty disputes.

And though the officers faced no criminal charges for the incident, the City of Cleveland later agreed to pay $6 million to settle a civil rights lawsuit brought by the Rice family. "We still need accountability".

"Our use of deadly force has gone dramatically down", he said.

Two officers were disciplined in 2015 for failing to thoroughly check Loehmann's personnel file before he was hired. "We have to go through our process".

Stephen Loomis, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolman's Association, called the discipline "unjustified" and said the union file grievances minutes after they were announced.

Earlier this year, the 911 dispatcher who took the call that led to the shooting was suspended for eight days for failing to tell the dispatcher who sent the officers to the rec center that the man who called 911 about "a guy" pointing a gun at people also said it could be a juvenile and the gun might be a "fake". Loehmann's firing was effective Tuesday.

Along with the suspension, Garmback will be required to attend additional tactical training.
