Angela Merkel says Europe 'must take fate into its own hands'

In the immediate aftermath of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Belgium and the G-7 summit in Italy, German chancellor Angela Merkel delivered a cautionary message to her fellow Europeans: It's time to "take our destiny into our own hands" and not rely on the U.S.

"But we have to know that we must fight for our future on our own, for our destiny as Europeans", she said.

Ms Merkel said that as the traditional western alliance is threatened by the new United States presidency and Brexit, "the times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days".

"I experienced that in the last a few days, and therefore I can only say that we Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands, of course in friendship with the United States and in friendship with Great Britain and as good neighbors wherever it is possible, also with Russian Federation and also with all the other countries".

US President Donald Trump arrives for a family photo with leaders of the G7 and leaders of some African countries that have been invited for the two-day talks, on the second day of the G7 summit of Heads of State and of Government, on May 27, 2017 in Taormina, Sicily. "The West has become smaller, at least it has become weaker". Although relations between Washington and Europe have been strained during periods since 1945, before Trump there has rarely been such a strong feeling from European leaders that they must turn away from Washington and prepare to face the world alone. Then at the G7 summit on Friday and Saturday, leaders including Merkel failed to convince Trump to commit to stay in the Paris climate deal.

Security was tight for Trump's journey to Bethlehem, a 20-minute drive from Jerusalem but located across Israel's separation wall. Israeli media also asked to have access to cover the visit and were told no, according to Israeli Channel 2.

But Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said that his boss had not meant to start a wave of Trump-bashing. The point, he said, was that airing such differences in an honest manner is necessary to maintain the trans-Atlantic alliance.

Kristine Berzina, a trans-Atlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund, said she saw Merkel's comments as more of an attempt to lay out her assessment of Trump for her fellow Germans.

But it was a clear repudiation of Trump's troubled few days with European leaders, even as she held back from mentioning the USA president by name.

But Mr. Trump has campaign promises to consider. Merkel closed out her Munich speech drinking a mug of beer surrounded by supporters doing the same. "Hard work but big results!" American consumers also form an important market for European products - including the German BMWs that Trump complained about in closed-door meetings in Brussels, according to German press accounts. Her spokesman Steffen Seibert, said Monday the chancellor is "a convinced trans-Atlanticist".
