Jorge Sampaoli seems set to swap Sevilla for Argentina

Sevilla and Argentina confirm Jorge Sampaoli

Argentina fired predecessor Edgardo Bauza in April.

The former Chile boss described leading Argentina as his "dream" job and told reporters after last weekend's final match of the campaign, a 5-0 win over Osasuna, that the AFA needed to resolve his contract situation with Sevilla.

Sevilla said the agreement rested on the drawing up and presentation of relevant documents, which should be signed by both parties on June 1.

AFA representatives have agreed to the rescission clause in SAMPAOLI'S contract, which local media reported to be 1.5 million euros (US $1.68 million).

But after being linked with the Argentina post, it appears to have been a position the Santa Fe born coach could not turn down.

A club statement read: "Sevilla FC and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) have reached an agreement in principle for Jorge Sampaoli to become Argentina's national team manager.

He steered the club to the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time since 2010, but they went out to surprise English champions Leicester City 3-2 on aggregate after failing to take their chances in a one-sided first leg.

The fifth-ranked side will advance to a playoff against the top nation from Oceania.

Argentina will now hope to have Sampaoli in place before the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Singapore in June.
