England into Twickenham quarter-finals and seal second spot

VICTORY Sevens Blitzboks coach Neil Powell

The Scots came from behind in all three knockout games yesterday in the final World 7s Series event of the season to secure the trophy they won in equally thrilling style a year ago.

England started day two of the London Sevens with a quarter-final triumph over World Series champions South Africa, before registering a 24-5 victory against Canada in the semi-final.

Former University of Victoria Vikes star Nathan Hirayama had scored a key Canadian try moments earlier as Canada rallied for the unlikely victory.

Richard de Carpentier had a try disallowed because he put a hand in touch, but England went into halftime 7-0 up.

Scotland took on a New Zealand side that were unbeaten on day one and were chasing shadows for Sam Dickson's opening try, as they struggled in the London summer sun.

"This one is for the country and for all our fans, especially those who watched us or listened to us play either late at night or early in the morning, when we were playing all over the world", he said.

They then defeated the United States of America 21-14 in the semi-final with Joe Nayacavou scoring the clinching try with time expiring having again trailed at half-time, and the story was the same in the final.

Yaya has interesting offers (but not from City)
But they will end the campaign without a trophy as they scrap to qualify for the Champions League via a top four finish. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on the departing Pablo Zabaleta: "His impact here was incredible ".

The momentum of the match changed and winger Jamie Farndale scored two tries, the second of which came after the hooter and sealed a famous 24-21 fightback for the Scots.

Dan Norton checked in from the left to beat four defenders and side-stepped the final man to give the Red Rose a 7-0 lead but Scotland - who featured Team GB star Mark Robertson in their ranks - responded as Hugh Blake dotted down before a series of deft offloads put captain Scott Riddell over in the corner for a 12-7 win.

On Saturday they accounted for Japan 33-7, Canada 19-14 and Fiji 27-21, a result which eliminated the Olympic champions.

All Blacks Sevens coach Scott Waldrom said the team are still disappointed with their 26-5 loss to South Africa in the semi-finals last week.

"In the final, the willingness to work for each other, that never say die attitude".

The fifth-place playoff against Australia was won in the second half thanks to a brace by Cecil Afrika and a spectacular final effort by Rosko Specman, who ran the length of the field to score the final try for a 28-17 win.

It was a valuable way to end the day with a quarter-final berth against the US awaiting the Aussies on Sunday morning.
