Social Security Administration releases most popular baby names list

According to Social Security, Emma and Noah are the most popular names in the United States.

Though the top ten baby names haven't changed much in the past few years, names near the bottom of the list have much more dynamic, subject to the vicious tides of pop culture.

Olivia, Ava, Sophia, Isabella, Mia, Charlotte, Abigail, Emily, and Harper round out the top names for girls.

Noah was the top baby name for boys for the fourth year in a row.

Right behind Noah is Liam, William, Mason and James.

For boys, the named that skyrocketed in popularity was Kylo, as in Kylo Ren, a character in the 2015 movie, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".

With baby name trends ebbing and flowing over the decades, the agency also reported the names with the greatest change in popularity for 2016. Kehlani jumped 2,487 spots to No. 872. Perhaps this can be attributed to Kehlani Parrish, a singer/songwriter who was nominated for a Grammy in 2016.

Choosing a baby name is important, so check out the list below.

On the flipside, all four versions of Caitlyn - Caitlin, Caitlyn, Katelynn and Kaitlynn - fell out of the top 1,000 in 2016.

Olympic Gold medalist Bruce Jenner announced in 2015 that she was a transgender woman and appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine donning her new name, Caitlyn Jenner. "Caitlyn was already falling in popularity".

The Social Security Administration compiles the baby names list is based on the names that parents in the US chose for their babies born in 2016. "Now it is suddenly controversial". This year's winners for biggest jump in popularity in the Top 1,000 are Kehlani and Kylo.
