Final French results show Macron on 24.01%, Le Pen 21.30%

Brexit spearhead Nigel Farage on Monday said France's far-right anti-immigration firebrand Marine Le Pen could score a shock upset in her country's upcoming presidential election run-off against European centrist Emmanuel Macron.

While centrist Emmanuel Macron is now largely seen by Russian politicians and experts as the most likely to win the run-off election on May 7, they suggested that as a president he won't help to solve France's political woes.

In a televised speech from the Elysee Palace, Hollande warned that Le Pen's anti-immigrant nationalism would "deeply divide France", which has been under a state of emergency since the 2015 ISIS terror attacks.

"Le Pen qualified for the second round; she may have scored less in percentage terms than was expected but it is frightening that she still got 7.6 million votes", he said. Unlike Fillon, who immediately backed Macron, Dupont-Aignan has not said how he would steer his voters. Le Pen has pledged to redenominate French debt into a new local currency if she won power.

President Francois Hollande will Tuesday morning pay homage to Jugele at the ceremony at his Paris police precinct during which he will be awarded one of France's highest honours and be posthumously given the rank of captain.

Choosing from inside the system is no longer an option, as voters rejected the two mainstream parties that have alternated power for decades in favour of Ms Le Pen and the untested Mr Macron, who has never held elected office and who founded his own political movement just past year. The turnout in the 2012 French presidential election was nearly identical.

Mr Fillon, who insisted to his The Republicans party that he would triumph despite damaging allegations that he had paid his wife and two children from the public purse for work they did not do, ended in third place with just short of 20% of the vote. Of the two choices in the second round, the veritable "detonator" of dynamite isn't necessarily the one we might imagine. But will those well to the Left of Macron - on university autonomy as well as many other issues - take a "purist" line and simply not bother to vote?

Both the candidates who made it through to the runoff are mavericks in different ways, both bucking the powerful French establishment. Macron has already agreed to share a stage with his daughter.

Seeking to exploit Macron's lack of experience in the area, she told reporters in her northern stronghold of Henin-Beaumont: "I'm on the ground to meet the French people to draw their attention to important subjects, including Islamist terrorism, on which Mr Macron is, to say the least, weak".

A daily rolling poll released by OpinionWay on Monday said the candidate of the newly created On the Move party would defeat Le Pen by 61% to 39%.
