Neil Gorsuch Confirmed to US Supreme Court

Gorsuch was confirmed Friday by the Senate.

Lawmakers voted 52-48 to prohibit a procedural tactic called a filibuster against Supreme Court nominees earlier this week, paving the way for senators to confirm Gorsuch by a simple majority.

Trump says in the statement that Gorsuch will serve "with distinction" and continue to "vigorously defend our Constitution".

Senator Jon Tester said, "I am deeply concerned that folks in the Senate chose to play politics with the U.S. Supreme Court and undermined the consensus needed for this lifetime post". "Judge Gorsuch is a strict constitutionalist who believes that a judge's personal policy preferences should not affect the outcome of a case".

The day after Neil Gorsuch's nomination to the Supreme Court was announced, I wrote about his sterling credentials, record of independence and long history of bipartisan support - and predicted they would matter little to hard-left special interests that invariably oppose the Supreme Court nominees of any Republican president.

Three Democratic senators up for re-election in 2018 in states won by Trump past year - Indiana's Joe Donnelly, West Virginia's Joe Manchin and North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp - voted for Gorsuch. Johnny Isakson of Georgia did not vote.

Further easing Gorsuch's transition is that his former boss, Justice Anthony Kennedy, remains on the court. So how could Neil Gorsuch's confirmation affect women, then? But this is an even bigger win with a young justice who can serve 30 years or more on the bench.

Mitch McConnell is hardly apologetic for his role in securing for conservatives the ninth seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, calling it "the most consequential decision I've ever been involved in".

For many conservatives, Trump's choice of Gorsuch made up for any number of other weaknesses in his candidacy and his administration. It's a tactic that Democrats had tried before - most recently when they attempted, unsuccessfully, to sink Bush's nomination of Samuel A. Alito Jr.in 2006 - and a tactic, by the way, that Senate Republicans have never employed.

A conservative-majority court is more likely to support gun rights, abortion regulations, an expansive view of religious liberty and Republican-backed voting restrictions, while opposing curbs on political spending.

McConnell - as he did on the Senate floor Thursday prior to the rules change - said ending the filibuster on judicial nominees returns the process "back where the country was for 230 years (when) presidents got an up or down vote on executive branch appointments". McConnell announced: "This will be the first and last partisan filibuster of a supreme court nominee".

The 54-45 vote, overseen by Vice President Mike Pence, fulfills Trump's promise to select a conservative jurist to fill the seat once held by the late Antonin Scalia and it ensures the nine-member court will maintain its rightward bent for the foreseeable future. "No. 2, it's genius, in that order, because he knew how much criticism he would get", said Sen.
