Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa was laid to rest at Marina Beach near her mentor and AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran's (MGR) memorial on Tuesday evening. Jayalalithaa's close aide Sasikala peformed the last rites and the national flag draped on the late chief minister's coffin was presented to her.

In the past, when Jayalalithaa faced political problems such as a jail term for corruption, her loyalists threatened to immolate themselves or lie down in streets for buses to run them over.

"What she did for women, the mothers and daughters, made her Amma (mother)". "This was not the age for her to die". After which her health was more critical and she was on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and life support systems.

As the funeral procession reached its destination, sobs filled the air. Many were in tears.

Many wailed and beat their chests in grief. There were loud cries of "Amma, Amma".

Jayalalithaa breathed her last on 11:30 pm on Monday, Apollo Hospital Chennai announced in a bulletin.
