Trump speaks publicly during Carrier plant visit

From the earliest days of his campaign, Donald J. Trump made keeping manufacturing jobs in the United States his signature economic issue, and the decision by Carrier, the big air-conditioner company, to move over 2,000 of them from in to Mexico was a tailor-made talking point for him on the stump.

December 1: Trump and Pence visit the Indianapolis factory to celebrate the deal, which includes $7 million in state tax incentives to retain about 1,000 jobs. Anthony Scaramucci, an entrepreneur and member of the Trump team's executive committee, said "the whole purpose" was to slash corporate tax rates to make it more competitive for USA companies to allocate capital at home. "Your taxes will be at the very low end and your unnecessary regulations will be gone", he said, repeating campaign promises to cut corporate tax rates from 35 percent to 15 percent and curb regulations on industry.

Trump repeated both ideas on Thursday.

He has been a Trump supporter and said this news means Trump is living up to his promises.

The length of the deal and Carrier's interest in a potential major investment at the plant are encouraging signs, say economic development insiders. Dan Coats of IN, who is reportedly under consideration to become Trump's director of national intelligence, praised the deal as a positive indicator of the incoming administration's ability to work with the private sector. He pitched himself as a champion for "forgotten" workers, a real estate mogul who would use his negotiating skills to convince companies to stop moving jobs overseas.

Trump said last week that he was "making progress" on trying to get Carrier to stay in Indiana. They will sell many air conditioners!

July 12: Trump again attacks the Carrier decision during a campaign rally in suburban Indianapolis, three days before he announces Pence as his running mate. The company will retain engineering and headquarters staff which will preserve more than 1,000 jobs.

In return for keeping less in the USA than they are moving to Mexico, United Technologies is getting a tax cut and incentive package worth $7 million over the next ten years.

From Indiana, Trump and Pence are to travel to OH to lead a post-election rally in Cincinnati.

General Manager Ryan DeSear told WBIR that 10,518 animals were left behind when workers had to evacuate Monday night due to smoke. Gatlinburg officials say several areas are being evacuated as a result of fires in and around Great Smoky Mountains.

The event Thursday in IN will be a rare public appearance for Trump, who has spent almost his entire tenure as president-elect huddled with advisers and meeting with possible Cabinet secretaries.

Other details of the deal in Vice President-elect and Indiana Governor Mike Pence's state were unclear but it has already been criticized on the left and right. Trump knows how to make a moment.

Trump has also talked with Ford, securing a commitment not to shift more production to Mexico for the time being (though some say the company wasn't going to do this anyway).

When asked, Pence's press secretary, Marc Lotter, said it was not the Trump-Pence campaign that denied Sanchez access to the event. Sanders hinted that under the bill, corporations wouldn't receive federal contracts or offer beefy bonuses to corporate execs if they outsource jobs, among other penalties.

There are now several hundred miles of border barrier separating the United States and Mexico.

Reuters reported earlier this week that United Technologies would still would proceed with plans to close its Huntington, Indiana United Technologies Electronic Controls plant that employs 700.

That was the message from former Democratic presidential contender Sen.

The plant now employs 1,400 people.
